Brown Hoodie Knitting Project: A Cozy Hand-Knit Garment for Winter

Brown is a warm and neutral tone that is neither exaggerated nor dull. I had planned to knit a brown hoodie for the autumn and winter season, but it was not scheduled until after the new year. Although it may not perfectly match spring, I wanted to seize the tail end of winter, especially since the highest temperature here is around 10°C. This allows brown to shine in my wardrobe and outfits.

Yarn: One strand of hand-knitting cashmere, one strand of 16-count cashmere, and one strand of 48-count wool, combined into three strands for knitting.

Needles: Size 8 for the main body, size 9 for the hem and cuffs, and size 10 for the collar stand.

Yarn Usage: 400 grams in total.

Dimensions after washing and laying flat: Length: 50 cm (measured from the highest point of the shoulder), Bust: 51 cm, Sleeve Length: 38 cm (measured from the armpit downward).

Knitting Process: This project starts with the collar stand, followed by knitting the hood from the bottom up, then proceeding from the top down. It is convenient with no seams. The horizontal gauge is approximately 24 stitches per 10 cm.

1. Collar Stand: Using size 10 needles, cast on 112 stitches with a single-finger wrap method. Knit 4 rows of stockinette stitch, 1 row of purl, and 4 rows of stockinette stitch. Switch to size 8 needles, fold and join to form a double-layer collar stand. Continue upward to knit the hood. In the next row, bind off 8 stitches for the front neckline, then work short rows for the left side of the hood: 2-9-4. After completing the short rows, knit to the right side of the hood and repeat the short rows 4 times: 2-9-4.

2. Hood: Continue knitting the 104 stitches in stockinette stitch. Increase stitches on each side of the two center stitches every 12 rows: 12-1-4, then knit 12 rows plain. Decrease 1 stitch, then continue decreasing: 6-1-2, 4-1-2, 2-1-4, 1-1-9, leaving 38 stitches. Graft the top of the hood together.

3. Hood Edging: Using size 9 needles, pick up stitches along the hood edge, picking up 2 stitches every 3 rows, for a total of 148 stitches. Knit 12 rows of stockinette stitch and seam to the inside. While knitting the 3rd row, leave holes on each side next to the 8th stitch. After completion, seam to the 8 bound-off stitches of the collar stand.

4. Hood Cord: Using size 8 needles, cast on 5 stitches and knit in i-cord method for 1 meter in length.

5. Yoke: Using size 8 needles, pick up 112 stitches and distribute them with 4 markers: 24+32+24+32. First, work short rows for the front neck: 2-2-5. Before completing the short rows, leave 12 stitches at the front neck and join for knitting in the round. While working short rows, increase stitches on both sides of the 24 stitches, following the pattern: 1-1-13, and arrange the stitch pattern for the front and back pieces simultaneously. After 5 short rows (10 rows), on the 11th row, close the gaps, increase stitches, and knit in the round. After completing 13 increases, redistribute 3 stitches from each side of the 24 shoulder stitches as raglan lines (leaving 18 stitches for sleeves). Increase stitches on both sides of these 3 stitches as follows:

Front and Back Pieces: 2-1-15, 4-1-7

Sleeves: 15-1-1, 4-1-7, 2-1-14

6. Separate Body and Sleeves:

Sleeves: 62 stitches each, place on holders.

Front and Back Pieces: 102 stitches each.

Raglan Lines: 3 stitches each.

7. Body: Cast on 12 stitches under each arm, with the 3 raglan stitches assigned to the body, totaling 240 stitches. Knit in the round to the desired length (approximately 80 rows in this project). Switch to size 9 needles and knit 24 rows of twisted rib stitch (k1tbl, p1), followed by 1 row of stockinette stitch, then bind off using the purlwise method.

9. Sleeve: Using size 8 needles, pick up 62 stitches. Pick up 13 stitches under the arm, resulting in a total of 75 stitches to work in the round. Decrease under the arm following the pattern: 11-1-9. Then work 7 rows even. 57 stitches remain. Switch to size 9 needles and decrease 3 stitches evenly across the round. With the remaining 54 stitches, work K1tbl, P1 ribbing for 22 rows. Work 1 row in knit stitch. Bind off all stitches purlwise.
